I am a 20-year-old Drummer/Percussionist from High River, AB, currently living in Edmonton with my band and working on getting a bachelor’s degree in music. I am very passionate about music as a whole and am dedicated to the growth and development of this magnificent art form! I pull inspiration from drummers such as Warren “Baby” Dodds, Elvin Jones, Ginger Baker, Anderson Paak, Nate Smith, and Drew Mcdonald. My most recent musical obsession has been Billy Cobham, one of the godfathers of fusion. I have been playing drums for about five and a half years and I was self-taught until I reached University which was about three and a half years after I started. I have a decent understanding of music theory as I can read snare parts, drum charts, lead sheets, and guitar tabs. I have gigged a fair bit around central and southern Alberta. My band is called Gratuitous Platypus, with which I have the larger portion of my gigging experience, as well as recording experience. We have recorded and released two EP’s on all major streaming services and are getting ready to release our debut album in the new year! We were also nominated for the “Zachariah and The Prophets” YYC Music Award in 2019.
Whether it be through my personal band, school bands, or freelance work, I have experience playing a wide range of musical styles and genres on drums such as Rock, Jazz, Latin, R&B, Funk, Blues, Country, and even some musical theatre accompaniment. My goal as your drum instructor would be to help you become confident in your pocket, fills, technique, improvisation, and flexibility on the drum kit! Furthermore, we would work together to develop a practice routine that develops these skills while keeping you engaged with the music. I also have an understanding of beginner to intermediate guitar techniques that will get you as far as learning the songs you love and possibly hitting a jam session, an open mic, or jamming around the campfire!
